A Guide to Gaia Online

Gaia Online is a fun site for kids as young as 13 to hang out at; but there are a few things that parents need to know. In my article on Associated Content, I walk through each area of the site that parents need to check out; the Privacy Policy, Information for Parents, the Terms of Service, and the Guidelines and how there's important information in there on how to keep kids safe. One of the easiest ways kids can protect themselves is to never EVER give their password out to ANYONE. EVER! I can't emphasize this enough! I recently had a friend of mine get hacked on the site, and another young girl who added me offered me her password. I was shocked that this young girl would so freely lend out her password to me; not only could she get hacked and all of her treasures get taken including her gold, but the hackers can go into her account info and find out where she lives and other private info. So, parents, please talk to your kids about not giving out their password! Also, it might be a good idea to be a member of the site yourself! I have a family that I'm friends with on the iste, and I think it's great that Mom, Dad, and daughter are all in this together. They can monitor the daughter's friends and help keep her safe. The economy on Gaia and the aquariums are a great way to teach your kids about taking care of animals (albeit virtual ones) and the importance of saving money. If your child is forced into saving his or her gold for a collectible, a new mermaid for their tank or a new outfit, that will really teach them the value of a dollar. And, when their fish die (and they do eventually) they will be required to spend gold or cash to buy more; and this will help you to show them that if they want the mermaid for 150,000 gold (or $10 cash) that they had better take care of her! So hidden within Gaia are some great life lessons; but some dangers lurk in the shadows; be sure to know the ins and outs of the site before you let your teen sign up. It will save both you and your kids a lot of hassles in the long run and make it a fun experience all the way around. Thanks for your reading!
